Knowing what is considered appropriate behavior is helpful in all situations, but is extremely important in business.  Every culture has its own uniqueness.  What is considered polite behavior for one could be down-right rude to another.  Hopefully this booklet will help steer you clear and onto the right road.

This booklet is written from the perspective of a United States’ citizen.

Excerpt

“Pg. 6 Canada is officially bilingual with the federal government working in the two official languages of English and French.  So, when doing business in French provinces, such as Quebec, provide a French translation for all materials.  But, it is best to have material in both languages just in case.  The same is true for business cards.  And, these are not exchanged during an initial greeting.”

“Pg. 10 Although you may quickly move to a first-name basis, the best policy is to wait to be invited to do so.  Be careful of name pronunciation, especially when dealing with Francophones.”

“Pg. 11 Business meals are popular in Canada with breakfast meetings becoming common. Business lunches are usually short with lighter foods and usually no alcohol. When invited to a dinner, it is to wait for your Canadian host to bring up the subject of business.”
